Road Trips can be fun, and a great way to bond with your family…they can also get very boring and frustrating for a child who has to be strapped in all day instead of getting dirty outside!
Kids can get quite irritated when they have nothing to do, and are masters of turning what was supposed to be a fun family road trip into a car ride from hell!
But it doesn’t have to be that way!
There are a number of things you can do to make your next road trip a fun experience for the entire family.
6 Secrets for a Stress-free Road Trip with Kids
Road Trip Coupons
Before you embark on your road trip adventures, create some simple travel coupons for each of your kids so that they can “cash them in” throughout the trip!
Place things like “choosing the music on the radio for 30 minutes”, or “choosing the song for the family to sing” (and anything else you can think of) on the coupons.
Some other good ones: choosing a treat at the next gas station you stop at, pick a movie (if there’s access), and deciding on what game to play next!
Rest Stop Yoga
Every time you get out of the car at a rest stop, lead your kids through some basic (or made up!) yoga poses to get a good stretch.
You can also let your kids make up some silly poses and you follow along. This will get them moving around and thinking in anticipation of the next rest stop!
Road Trip Bingo
Create bingo cards for your kids of what they might see along the road. Laminate them for durability, and then give each child a card. The child who wins gets a prize, like getting to pick the music in the car, or other things similar to the travel coupon idea!
Create Travel “Busy Kits”
Head on over to your local dollar store and stock up on coloring books, crayons, markers, flashcards and any other fun things you can find to create “busy kits” for each of your kids!
Hold onto these until they start to get bored, then you can pass them one of the kits as a “fail safe”, and they’ll be able to stay entertained for a few hours!
You can also throw in some small toys and books for older children.
Travel Snack Surprises
Create travel snack surprises by getting brown lunch bags and filling them with fun snacks or treats, and then label the outside with a different city that you’ll drive through on the road trip!
Each time you pass through one of those cities, hand them a surprise bag of snacks…you could even theme them based on the area!
Create a fun on-the-go magnet board using an inexpensive cookie sheet and a bunch of fun magnets for your kids to play with!
Plus, that cookie sheet can double as a hard surface for coloring and the edge will keep any crayons from rolling away underneath the car seats!
Genius, I think so!
