Working from home is definitely a “dream job” for many, and the popularity has grown significantly among over the last few years!
I hear it again and again, Mom’s choosing to be a stay at home Mom after maternity leave, not because they can afford to, but because they can’t afford to go back!
With the combined cost of daycare and transportation, most end up working for mere pennies an hour, and once you factor in the time you are also sacrificing with your little one for those pennies, it just doesn’t add up.
Working at home removes the need for daycare, slashes gas expenses, and allows you to spend time with your little one each day!
With that said, there are some aspects that many people don’t consider when deciding to work at home…and that’s why I’m here!
After being a “work at home Mom” for the last 4 years, I can tell you it’s not just about starting, you really need to take control of your business just like any other if you want it to succeed!
7 Secrets of Successful Work At Home Moms
1. You are the company!
If you work for yourself, you are now the face of your own company in every daily interaction. You never know where you will bump into your next customer/client/reader, so be prepared!
I know this seems simple, but don’t forget your manners! Many of us can let our standards for treating others slip when we are having a bad day, or dealing with people we assume we’ll “never see again”…you never know!
It’s important to treat others well, not only to set a great example for your little one, but to portray the image you want associated with your business!
2. Treat work like work!
Would you head into the office in your comfy old pj’s? Probably not!
Dressing for success is not just for public, and it’s not a myth either! Like many other work at home Moms, I’ve gone through the “PJ phase”, and I can tell you it greatly impacts not only your level of productivity, but your self confidence, and that will roll right into your business!
Get up and get dressed as though you are heading out to where you worked before your maternity leave, I promise you will see the difference!
3. Stick to a schedule!
A schedule is crucial to balancing work and life when you’re home of operations is home! It can take some time to figure out what works best for you, but make figuring it out a priority!
It gets overwhelming when you start seeing all the time as work time (because you really never get to leave!), so stick to the schedule you set, trust that you set it for a good reason, and shut off when it’s time!
4. Put in what you want to get out!
If you want a “hobby” income, treat it like a hobby. If you want a “full time” income, you better be ready to work!
It’s true that working from home eliminates the travel time and need for daycare, but not much else, especially at first! Until you get to the point where you expand and bring on team members, you are the CEO, Head of Operations, Public Relations, Accountant, and everything in between!
Is it possible to work part time for a full time income? Absolutely, but only once you’ve put in the time to establish your business and audience/client base.
5. Keep a separate workspace!
I cannot stress this enough! This is another one that I’ve suffered the negative impact of, and I can tell you that this is a must!
It doesn’t need to be a complete home office setup (although that would be nice, and I’d be super jealous!), but it needs to be something that you can tuck away out of sight during your “down time”.
One of the biggest struggles work at home Moms can have is knowing how to separate work and home life, since it can very easily blend together!
Being able to visually put work away will help you make that differentiation, and also helps clear your head of work, making room for new ideas!
6. Follow your passion!
If you’re not doing something you love, you won’t ever be truly successful!
Working at home while running a household and caring for children is (to say the least!) a challenge, so you really need to have the drive to continue piling it all on your plate every day!
Make sure you are doing something in a field you love, in a way you love, to give you steam to keep going when things get tough!
7. Take breaks/get out of the house!
When you make the jump into working from home, you’ll find that not leaving the house between the two can become for of a curse than a blessing if not managed correctly!
Always make sure you that when you are creating your schedule, you work in breaks that get you moving and out of the house as much as possible! The last thing you want is to start feeling more stuck than when you worked outside of your home!
