People often wonder how to be happy living with less.
If there’s an alternate route to constantly trying to “keep up with the Jones’”, and valuing yourself based on how much you have in your home.
Sometimes we even buy things just to have them, without even considering if we really need them. How crazy is that?!
We spend as a status symbol, we spend to fit in, we spend because we think we have to, because that’s what people do, right?
Because of this, so many of our homes are cluttered with stuff that never gets used, and our closets are filled with items that never get worn. But instead of decluttering any of it, we continue to feed the cycle, buying more and more things and letting them add up in our home!
You’d probably be surprised to know that half of the stuff you have isn’t getting used as much as it should, and probably as much as you thought you would use it when you were at the cash register!
It happens to the best of us!
It’s not only our homes and closets that are cluttered with stuff, but our lives too. If you’ve been thinking about simplifying your home and life, now’s the time to do it! Don’t wait, don’t delay, just do it!
I don’t even need to give tips and tricks here on how to be happy living with less, because purging your home (and life) of unnecessary things will automatically lead to better, happier, more stress free living!
I can speak to this from personal experience! When we sold our house and downsized last year, some of the “decluttering” caused me some serious anxiety! I worried “What if I need that later”, or I thought that certain things had memories attached to them… as though I’d forget the person/event if this item wasn’t sitting on a shelf somewhere collecting dust!
Once I gave in and just followed my hubby’s lead on this one, I was almost instantly relieved, refreshed, and motivated to do more! Here’s why…
Decluttering: How To Be Happy Living With Less
You’ll save time!
You might not notice it, but you lose out on more time the more stuff you have! They require more maintenance, take time to clean and organize, and of course looking for it if you misplace it somewhere!
You can easily use this wasted time doing more things like spending time with your family, relaxing or anything else you don’t usually have time for. How many times do you think to yourself “It would be so nice to have just 10 minutes to sit and relax”…how much time do you think you spend taking care of, cleaning, or looking for things?
You’ll stay organized longer
Staying organized when you have clutter everywhere is no easy task. Add kids on top of that and you don’t stand a chance! It makes it harder to have an organized home when you have more than you need.
If you have a ton of stuff, it’s hard to have a place for it all, and you’ll most likely end up putting it anywhere you can find room for it. And when you have a ton of “stuff”, it’s easy to lose that stuff!
When you have less, it’s easier to stay organized. You’ll be able to place everything where it’s supposed to go, and save time knowing where everything is when you need it!
You’ll Feel More Relaxed
When there’s less clutter, you’ll notice that everything just seems calmer. You’ll be able to look anywhere and know that something is out of place, fix it, and then move on.
If it’s cluttered (and you’re anything like me!) you’ll get stressed out having to find a place for it, and you’ll waste time and energy cleaning up more once you get started!
Plus, visual clutter in general will just stress you out. It’s tiring to see everything you have at once. When you have less, your home will be clean and those now open spaces will be energizing, welcoming, and refreshing!
You’ll Have More Money
You had to know this was coming! When you live on less and declutter your life, you’ll notice that you have more money in your bank account!
You won’t be spending as much, and you won’t have to spend more money trying to find ways to organize all your things either! Plus, you’ll avoid wasting money buying things you already have since you now know where everything is!
You can actually stand to make money selling those items that you no longer need, and come out ahead!
Living with less isn’t about going without – it’s about going without the things you don’t need!
You’ll Have A Cleaner House
Not only will you be more organized, but you’ll also have a cleaner house that’s more inviting…in less time!
Keep only the things you love and use and you’ll create a space that is clean, inviting and “homey” with a fraction of the time and effort!
Guests will enjoy coming over to your home now that you don’t have things everywhere, and you’ll always be ready to invite in those “pop-ins” because you don’t have a disaster going on behind that front door!
You’ll Appreciate More Of What You Have
When you have less, you begin to appreciate what you do have even more. You’ll find yourself more grateful for what you own and love, than having unnecessary things that don’t mean much to you.
This also means you’ll be more inclined to take proper care of what you have, allowing it to last longer than usual, and saving you more money!
You’ll Learn To Focus On What Counts!
When you live with less, you realize that you don’t actually need a lot to make you happy, and that stuff can only take you so far.
You’ll be able to focus on what really matters when you declutter your life, and that’s your family, and yourself. Focus on things you like to do instead of things you’d like to have, or wasting time caring for items you haven’t ever used!
Once you declutter your surroundings (think home, car, desk, etc.) and live with less, you’ll find yourself a lot happier and living a more fulfilled life. You’ll also find yourself able to accept change better, and will be able to focus on fulfillment in other areas of your life too!
You don’t need to declutter your entire home tomorrow!
Instead, start by concentrating on one room at a time. Before you know it, your entire house will have less clutter, and you will start to see the changes that come along with your new space!
