Before anyone goes crazy that I’m suggesting computer games for young children, let me first make it very clear…this is not a substitution for playtime outside!
Nothing is better for your kids than fresh air and a ton of outdoor adventure!
But let’s be real, technology is going to be a large part of your child’s life, whether you’re a fan of it or not! So it’s great to be able to introduce it to them in small doses so they are comfortable learning about it when the time comes, rather than intimidated!
The free online games for kids we play are…
- great for developing fine motor skills (using a computer mouse)
- played with my hubby and I! We don’t just sit Maddie in front of the computer and say “go nuts!”
Fisher Price is our favorite source for online games for children right now, offering a series of games for infants, toddlers, and preschool children!
You can sort them by age, category, and even their favorite characters!
There are some really great ones available to help your child learn colors, numbers, ABC’s, counting, and more!
Plus, at the risk of seeming a little simple, they can be pretty entertaining for you too!
I certainly wouldn’t recommend making this a daily routine. Physical activity and outdoor time (when possible) are much more important, but we will usually play these for about 15 minutes, 2-3 times a week.
It makes it a bit of a treat that it’s not every day, and she LOVES sitting on our lap and using the computer she’s told is “hands off” the rest of the week!
As an added bonus, using the mouse in order to select “which animal is different” or “which of these animals makes this sound” is great for fine tuning those motor skills!
