We recently explored How To Make Colored Rice at our house, and it has provided hours of fun since!
Many of the recipes I came across used rubbing alcohol to help spread the coloring, which I didn’t want to use.
I don’t know about you, but I’m not too keen on using anything with the word “alcohol” in it for something Maddie will be playing with, and let’s be real here, will definitely decide to taste!
My imagination takes me away to a place where she decides she likes the taste of colored “booze rice”, and suddenly I turn around to an empty container, a drunken toddler, and the police knocking on my door.
Excessive, maybe, but I guess we’ll never really know
So, in avoidance of this terrifying picture I conjured up in my mind, we made our colored rice without rubbing alcohol, using apple cider vinegar instead!
To be honest, I didn’t know how much fun the colored rice was really going to be. We are having to make some adjustments to our diet, and I had a bag of rice that was already open (couldn’t be donated) but needed to leave our house, so we thought we’d give it a try.
We’ve used it for rainbow colored shakers, and have glued it to paper crafts, but as always, the imagination and creativity of a small child never ceases to amaze me!
It has actually become our portable “dig site”! Our little archaeologist has been digging for “dinosaur bones” and loving every minute!
Once the colored rice was combined into a large tupperware container, we dropped in 10 birthday candles we had sitting around, and buried them. Maddie loves to use a basting brush to carefully brush away the colored rice and try to find all 10 candles…ah-hem…I mean “BONES”!
One note I will make for those that may give this as little after-thought as I had…make sure the container you put it in has a tightly fitting lid, best would be one that locks on!
We had a minor incident where the container fell off the table and the lid popped off…I now have my own hunt going on each day when I sweep the kitchen!
