There’s huge appeal in making money online!
You get to work wherever you want, whenever you want, and have access to a world of “customers” via the good old internet, right?!
Here’s the truth, up front, before you get all “starry-eyed” at the idea of working from home…it’s a lot harder than you think!
It’s not all free time and easy paychecks!
That being said, if you have the right guidance and put the work in, you can earn a considerable income from home, doing something that makes you happy…completely worth the effort if you ask me!
I’ve worked online for the last 4 years (when Maddie was born) since what started as a coupon blog for friends and family blew up and caught the attention of thousands of other people!
Once you learn the secrets of successful work at home moms, getting the ball rolling on a new blog is a lot easier to fit into your day than you think!
I really wanted to write this post since I took the leap and started from scratch with RockItLikeAMom.com recently, and have been reminded how much work needs to go into a blog to reach the right people!
Once you have that following, there are a number of ways that you can make money blogging, and that’s what I’ll be focusing on today!
How To Make Money Blogging
Ad networks are a great way to earn passive income (something you don’t need to work on regularly) since all you need to do is start an account, place the ad code on your site, and get paid!
While passive income is never something to turn away, this can also be very unpredictable since it can fluctuate based on what advertisers are paying for your keywords, as well as the amount of traffic you have. Even with a high traffic blog, you can make minimal income if the ads being shown aren’t relevant to your audience, which means they aren’t clicking on them!
Ad networks like Google Adsense or Yahoo Ads are great for starting to earn money online with little effort, but take time to get built up to a substantial income (I didn’t really earn much from my larger site for the first year), and shouldn’t be relied upon as the sole income source.
Many online retailers offer affiliate programs to blogs with a reach to their ideal customer. This means that you apply to the affiliate program, and once you are approved you get personalized links to place in posts on your blog. If any sales are made from your link being clicked, you get a percentage!
The great thing about this is you get to suggest products or services to your audience that are relevant to them (will genuinely interest/help them), and they will still be paying the same as they would if they visited the online store directly!
The key to succeeding in affiliate sales is ensuring you aren’t just promoting something because you’ll make some money from it…you’ll only make money if your audience buys it! Make sure you only post items that are appealing, relevant, and well priced to your readers, or you will lose their trust, and loyalty is the main thing that will help your blog grow.
Once you’ve established a bit of a following, you can sell certain spots on your blog privately. This means a specific company would pay your set rate to have only their ad shown in that spot for a set amount of time (usually month to month).
The benefit of this is you can set your own rate based on your traffic, and what you know your blog is worth, and will earn that set amount whether your readers click through that ad or not (they are paying for the potential traffic).
The tricky part is finding a company that is not only the right fit, but feels that you are also the right fit for them! Once you find those relationships, this is a great reliable source of online income!
Sell Your Own Product!
Creating your own product to market to your followers is another great way to earn money online!
Just like with affiliate sales, you want to make sure you are offering something worthwhile to your readers. It must relate to the topic of your blog, and be useful, or you risk not making any sales on top of losing the fan base you have already created!
An example of this is (insert shameless plug here!) the RockItLikeAMom Home Management System…ah-hem… 😉
As far as the types of products, that will depend on your blog topic as well. Generally speaking, digital products are easiest to manage (ebooks, printables, online courses, etc.) since there is no shipping involved. But if your readers would be interested in a physical product you would love to make for them, go for it!
There are tons of opportunities to make money blogging, but the real way to make sure you succeed is to make sure you are in it for the long haul! Choose a topic you are passionate about, and could talk about endlessly!
You wont be earning a full time income overnight, it takes time. So make sure you are diving into something you love, because not only will you probably be doing it for peanuts in the start, but your readers will be able to tell if you’re not all in!
No one wants to follow someone who’s just going through the motions! If your passion shows through in your writing, they will become passionate about your blog!
