Sometimes our pets can cost us an arm and a leg in food, so it’s lucky they’re so damn cute!
I mean seriously…look at that picture! I can actually hear you all saying “Awwwww!”, cause I was when I found it!
Since we just can’t say no to faces like that, I wanted to share these tips and help lighten the bills associated with our furry friends!
Keep in mind, not all of these tips will work for every pet, you know your pet best! And always check with your vet before making any drastic changes to your furry friend’s diet!
How To Save Money On Pet Food
Buy Store Brand
Most people think that store brand pet food is low quality, but there have been so many expansions to generic pet food options (even offering grain-free options) that you can usually find something comparable to a brand name at a fraction of the cost!
When in doubt, don’t be afraid to lay out a couple bags on the floor in the store (I’ve done it!) and compare the ingredients right there on the spot!
Coupons & Samples
Sign up for your favorite brand’s newsletter to be the first to know about promotions and deals available!
Make Your Own
This will save you tons of money and gives your pet extremely healthy food (since you know exactly what’s going in it!).
When creating your own dog food, make sure you are meeting your dog or cat’s caloric needs, and ensure you aren’t including any of those “no-no” foods that could make them sick.
When we make dog food, we include items like potatoes, rice, carrots, ground turkey or chicken, plain yogurt, brown rice flour…we change it up every time based on what we have on hand!
Follow Companies on Social Media
Follow your pet’s favorite brand on Twitter and Facebook. They will typically have FREE products or samples to giveaway, or coupons to help you save money, at one time or another. Follow and you will be the first to know!
As an added bonus, pet food companies will usually provide you with lots of helpful information on the general care of your pet through these outlets as well, so you can learn while you wait!
Create a Pet Food Price List
Shop around for the best price, compare stores, and make notes of the one that works best for your pet, and your pocket book.
If you can, shop at major retailers like Walmart or Real Canadian Superstore, they will be much cheaper then specialty pet stores such as PetValu.
If you live in a small town and only have the “Mom & Pop” option, don’t be afraid to ask if they would offer you some sort of savings to shop there exclusively…your pet will be providing income to someone for many years to come, see what they’ll offer you to make it them!
