After stumbling and bumbling through potty training this far, we were beginning to lose hope!
You know when you start getting to that point where you’re thinking “That’s it, she’s just going to be wearing diapers when she’s 20, no big deal, we’ll work around it…”? We were there!
Luckily, we decided to dive right into one last method that was suggested by a family member before taking a break to regroup and figure things out…and it worked!
Since trying this, we were immediately diaper-free during the day, and were diaper-free through the night 3 months later!
Now, if this is the first place you’ve landed in our Potty Training Journey, I strongly suggest checking out Part 1 and Part 2 before reading any further. There are some important learnings there that really contributed to our success in the end!
Our Potty Training Journey: Part 3
After seeing the impact it had in Part 2, we stuck with the Bear in The Big Blue House video and watched it at least 3-4 times a week! This helped make the whole idea really familiar to Maddie, and increased her comfort levels with the whole idea of using the potty.
The game changer…Our Naked Weekend!
We set up a potty in our main living area, and a potty in the washroom, and kept Maddie naked from the waist down for 3 entire days (night and day)!
The idea behind this is to have them feel the wetness when they have an accident, and see the mess on the floor. It’s not comfortable at all, and they don’t want to go through it again!
You do need to be prepared to clean up a mess or two, and stay close to run them to the potty if they start to have an accident (which is why it’s best to have multiple potties, so you always have one close by!), but after she had her first accident, we simply asked if she’d like to sit on the potty every 60-90 minutes (depending on her body language), and she was much more willing to try!
One very important note on this method, do not scold your child when they have accidents! The point is not to make them feel bad about it, but to actually experience the sensations of wetting the floor (or wherever).
When Maddie had accidents, we simply didn’t say anything. We removed her from the situation to clean her up, then kept her where she could see us cleaning it up. This way, she saw what was happening as the result of her accident, but wasn’t made to feel bad about it.
Encouragement is always the best way to go! So everytime she would successfully use the potty we had a “Potty Party” and would dance our crazy asses off to celebrate, and she would get some sort of reward as well (a cookie, sticker, choose an activity, etc.)!
By the second day she was much more willing to sit on the potty when we asked, and by the third day she was going on her own! SUCCESS!
The nighttime didn’t follow suit as quickly, so we decided to just spend some time enjoying her daytime success, and continued to use “nighttime panties” at night for about 2 months.
During the third month…we “Dream peed”!
Remember “dream feeding” when your little one was nursing? Same idea, but not nearly as cute!
Maddie wasn’t allowed anything to drink within an hour before bedtime, and would pee right before we went to bed. Then after she’d been asleep for about 2 hours we would carry her from her bed, sit her on the toilet, and she would pee without even waking up! It sounds weird, but it totally worked!
This nighttime pee emptied her bladder and she would last until the morning.
As the last month went on, we let the 2 hours turn to 3, then 4, then stopped taking her altogether…and we haven’t had wet sheets since!
Please remember, I can only speak to what worked best for us! Every child is different, and will learn in their own way/time! But with how quickly this helped the transition to being diaper-free and fully potty trained, I would definitely suggest giving it a try!
