With our move to a new home creeping up in just about 2 weeks, I’ve been on?”organize overload” for awhile now trying to prepare!
While moving all of your belongings from one place to another in about 24 hours will never really be “stress-free”, something has happened for me that has taken an incredible amount of that stress right out of my house…literally!
I read for about 20 minutes each night before I got to bed, and am not a slow reader, so needless to say I go through?a lot of books! I had just finished another book about a week before Mother’s day, and mentioning it to my parents was probably the best thing I could have done!
On Mother’s Day, my parents gave me a copy of an incredible book, The Life-Changing Magic Of Tidying Up:The Japanese Art Of Decluttering and Organizing.
First, this book is?phenomenal! As in, all around just amazing! It was easy to read, simple to follow, and made complete and utter sense in the way that you will say “OMG, YES!” several times while reading it!
My Take-aways From The Book…
The approach of this book is different than any other organizing tutorial or guidance you will find. Most strategies advocate tackling one room at a time, or a little bit of purging each day…this is polar opposite, and it’s effective!
Instead of taking it bit by bit, Marie Kondo recommends tackling it all in one shot! Dedicate a weekend if you have a lot to go through, and get it done! Not only does this encourage a much more drastic change of environment and mindset since it’s a sudden change (which will help it stick!), but it gets everything done thoroughly and efficiently!
Marie also recommends purging category by category, as opposed to moving room by room. This way if you start with “clothing”, you are seeing?everything you have at one time, and are able to see items you have that may be similar so you can pare those down. Also, your favorites will “shine” compared to the not so popular pieces, making it easier to part with those that don’t make you happy!
The goal when you are done is to live in an environment where you are only surrounded by things that thrill you, that make you happy, things that you love! To me, this makes complete and utter sense!
When saying it, it makes you want to say “Well duh! Why would anyone want to surround themselves with things that don’t make them happy?”…but we all do it every day!
After our last move, I thought I had pared down to the mere essentials, and only kept things that we loved. But after reading The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up,?and looking at decluttering from a whole new angle, I was able to donate 7 garbage bags of clothing, books, and household items, and also removed another 4 garbage bags of junk!
With all said and done, I am still baffled at the fact that we were living with 11 garbage bags of stuff that was useless, served no purpose, and didn’t make us happy. I was shocked to say the least!
I am actually thrilled to be moving in a couple of weeks after my big purge, not only because I feel like the move will be so much smoother (11 bags smoother!), but because I know we are moving into a new space where we will be surrounded by only the things that make us happy from the start!
If you are someone who has tried to declutter in the past, and have had to tackle it again and again, or just find that your home isn’t relaxing or making you feel happy, I really recommend giving this book a read!
